As a drunk driving lawyer, I often feel a little conflicted. On the one hand, I do not want to condone drunk driving, and I do not want to encourage it as some people may believe. I am against drunk driving because I have personally seen the horrors of what can happen. On the other hand, I believe that every person should be entitled to a fair, legal trial in which they have a good defense on their side. I also have bills that I need to pay just like everybody else, so being good at defending people charged with drunk driving is something that I need to do. I know that the public view even the best drunk driving lawyer as they do drunk drivers. We are defending the people who broke the law, and we fight to get them the lesser punishment.
As a drunk driving attorney, it is true that we do defend a lot of people who were in the wrong. I have even defended people who caused permanent injury to others during their drunk driving accident. While some of my clients have had worse outcomes than others. The majority of my clients have been a little over the legal limit, have not caused any harm to themselves or others, and have been extremely upset with themselves, convincing me that they will not let this happen again. A DUI on your record can ruin your life. It can make it difficult to find a job, and your insurance rates are ridiculous. A lot of the times people may turn against you. I got into DUI law to work to lessen the consequences for those people who made a one-time mistake that did not result in any permanent damage.
My number one piece of advice for everyone is to simply not drink and drive. It is scary, the consequences are long lasting, and you are not only risking your life, but also the lives of the people in your car and the other people driving on the road. There are so many ways to avoid drunk driving, and it really should not be an issue. First, you should have a designated driver when you are going out. Second, if your designated driver has a drink too many, then you should pay for a taxi or an Uber to take you home. A taxi ride is much less expensive than a DUI.
If you get a DUI, there will be court fees, legal fees, fines, and of course, raised insurance rates. If you do not want to leave your car and have to come back with it (even though that would still be cheaper than a DUI), then you can stay the night in a hotel close by or even go to a 24-hour diner to have a meal and sober up before you drive. I know that a lot of people know this and that logic can leave you when you are intoxicated. From a drunk driving attorney who has seen it all, you need to come up with a fail-safe way to avoid driving while you are drunk.
